A boy wants a mother, a woman wants a son…
May’s Boys opens in 1944. May Sheppard is preparing herself to visit war-ravaged Southampton the following day in search of her evacuee’s mother. May and eleven-year-old Cliff want to make their relationship formal by adoption, but will May be able to trace Cliff’s mother, Lynette? And will Lynette agree to let the son she hasn’t contacted in five years stay in the home he loves?
The story is set in the fictional Dorset village of Crompton Parva where the residents are facing up to the deprivations of war but many refuse to welcome outsiders into their lives.
The end of war in Europe is celebrated with a VE Day street party, but what will the new freedom mean for May and Cliff?
Reviews for May’s Boys
“This book certainly tugs at the heartstrings and I enjoyed it just as much as similar evacuee/land girl stories I have read by much more famous authors in the genre. Highly recommended…” Vivien Brown, author
“If you’re looking for a riveting read, I thoroughly recommend May’s Boys. Right from the start, I was completely involved with this story, soaking up the authentic feel of the countryside in the Second World War… the senses are beautifully evoked, the dialogue crackles on the page and the tension builds up gradually, along with countless surprises.” Barbara Dynes, author and columnist
